Surfing Chaos: Narratives Across the Digital Divide

Tom Haymes, Ideator, Ideaspaces

What a strange trip 2020 has been. From politics to pandemic to jarring digital shifts in teaching and learning and now to the politics of pandemic education it’s been hard to make sense of it all. As we struggle as teachers and educational leaders, our students are also adrift in a sea of chaos. College itself is a chaotic experience for them. There is so much to make sense of in the whirling hurricane of thought and ideas that they encounter. What am I supposed to learn? What’s important? What’s the point of it all? This was daunting when I entered college 30 years ago. Now the pandemic has cast these fragile communities of learning to the digital winds. Join us on a Learning Man hike through the construction of narratives within classes, degrees, and lifelong learning. It will challenge participants to present the narratives of learning (and the tools available to them) that they present their students and our student participants to consider the maps (tools) they are being given to navigate the complex pathways back to the Learning Man campfire. (We promise to send out search parties for those left behind in the desert.)

Using Data Insights and Analytics to Improve Remote Learning

Emma Giles, COO; Ayse Baybars, Chief Joy Officer

These past 5 months have been a whirlwind. Students are at home, and...so are we. So how do we know how they’re doing? Sure, we can do tests, and we can mark attendance, but do we really know how they’re doing? Who’s struggling - who’s falling behind? Who’s excelling and could help a friend? Are students using school resources? How much? Are there internet resources out there that could help all of our students if we knew about them? So many questions. So little time.

Join Team Sophya as we do a deep dive into data, analytics, insights, and privacy in the learning environment. We’ll start with an emoji-filled competitive flashcard game bonanza (yes, there are prizes), hear from breakout participants about data that’s been helpful or that you wish you could have, and see how robust data can lead to improved curricula and ultimately to the educational holy grail: personalized learning (for real, this time!).
