Sophya
Engaging Students in a Remote World

Colton Neves, Designer, and Sebastian Kasza, BizDev & Outreach

Whew, what a semester. The past 5 months have been incredibly challenging for us all as we’ve adapted and changed our teaching, rolled with punches, and in most cases - been hit by them. There have been many lessons learned, and we’re all so much better equipped for the Fall. What’s become crystal clear for all of us though, is that engaging our learners is going to be so key going forward.

Join Team Sophya for a collaborative session about student engagement. We’ll start with an emoji-filled competitive flashcard game bonanza (yes, there are prizes), gather ‘best practice’ perspectives from around the breakout session, and share how students around the world are hitting their engagement, socializing, and happiness stride with Sophya’s student-centered learning experience.

Oh, and the best-practices discussed will be curated as a take-home resource for everyone too.

Are We Being Replaced by AI?  The Science of Learning, Technology and the Future of Higher Education

Dr. Candace Thille is Amazon’s Director of Learning Science, working with the company’s Global Learning and Development team to scale and innovate workplace learning at Amazon

Higher education is struggling to address its most significant challenge: educating an increasingly diverse body of students while containing the cost that is putting postsecondary education beyond the reach of a growing percentage of the world's population. An emerging marriage of the science of learning and technology challenges the belief that improving productivity in education necessitates a reduction in quality. Moreover, the view that the processes of learning are too complex to yield to scientific understanding is no longer tenable. Learning scientists are making advances in our understanding of human learning, and this knowledge can transform how we support learners and Instructors. We have seen cycles of hype and reality. The digital ecosystem has reshaped many dimensions of our lives and will reshape the higher education ecosystem  What have we learned from all this that should shape our strategies for addressing the challenge of higher education.

Allison Hall, Director of Learning Experience Transformation @ ASU, Wayne Skipper, Founder of Concentric Sky

By attaching digital credentials to learning experiences you can empower learners to craft and share their learning journey through digital artifacts. In this session, we will sit at the virtual craft table in breakout rooms to create your own digital credential while we chat about designing credentials to support lifelong learning. We will then stitch together our squares into a virtual background quilt and gallery walk when we come back together. Come join us at the quilting bee!

Three Easy Pieces: Building a Foundation for Black Swan Thinking

Ruben R. Puentedura, Ph.D.

This ain't no party, this ain't no disco,
This ain't no fooling around.
Talking Heads, Life During Wartime

When COVID-19 struck, many organizations were taken by surprise in an unexpected way: they’d done all the crisis workshops, and discussed what-ifs and future scenarios - so why did their organizational response still fall short? It turns out that scenario work is important, but you also need to understand how the pieces work - or don’t work - when Black Swans fly in. For our LearningMan arts and crafts project, we’ll get our hands dirty playing with three key components: systems, agents, and networks. And you’ll leave with a lot more than a tangle of popsicle sticks and pipe cleaners: you’ll have a rough cut of a set of tools that can help build compasses when magnetic north has gone missing.

4:15 p.m. Campfire: Launching the Learner Rocket Ship

This Fall, millions of learners will set out on an exciting new journey. Their destination might be improved career skills, nailing their university exams, or simply achieving Chief Geek status about a topic they care about.

But students are worried about the Fall semester, and rightfully so. It’s not totally clear to them how they reach their learning goals in the current online learning setup. There’s content overload everywhere they look. They don’t have ways to connect with their peers for fun, social, engaging learning. And there are few clear lines between them and the teachers they really want to be connected with.

Sophya is here to fix all this. In this plenary session, learn how Sophya provides a hyper engaging digital learning experience for students - learning science and social learning tools included. Sophya helps students to navigate and be successful in their journeys, using help from their peers all over the world, from all of the learners who came before them, and from all of YOU - the education leaders. Along the way, we make every educator and administrator’s life easier, with robust analytics and a ridiculously good user experience.
