The Station1 Model

In 2016, then-MIT dean Christine Ortiz left the university to start a new type of university without lectures or classrooms. That idea has grown into a fledgling nonprofit university called Station1, which its website says has “educated over 90 undergraduate fellows” and partnered with 90 organizations.

Station1 is ... building a new higher education institution based on socially-directed science and technology. Drawing upon a foundation of inclusion and equity, the Station1 model re-envisions the scientific and technological inquiry process through the integration with humanistic fields at a
granular level. In addition to core values and a mindset of social responsibility, rigorous cross-disciplinary methodologies are utilized to interrogate and shape technologically-driven social impact iteratively at every stage towards more equitable, ethical, and sustainable outcomes.
